TikTok Spark Ads code: how to generate, apply and fix authorization codes
Published · by the FireplaceUGC team
A Spark Ads code (TikTok calls it a video code or authorization code) is how a creator lets an advertiser run one of their organic TikTok posts as an ad. The creator opens the post, taps the three dots, goes to Ad settings, turns on Ad authorization, taps Generate, picks a duration of 7, 30, 60 or 365 days and copies the code. The advertiser pastes it into TikTok Ads Manager, either in the Spark Ads posts library or straight into an ad, and can authorize up to 20 codes at a time. The steps below come from TikTok's Ads Manager help pages as checked on October 18, 2026.
What a Spark Ads code actually does
Spark Ads are TikTok's native ad format built on organic posts. The ad runs as the real post, so views, comments, shares, likes and follows earned while it is promoted count toward that original post rather than toward a separate ad copy. An advertiser can spark posts from its own account or from another creator's account, and the second case needs the creator's permission. The authorization code is that permission, scoped to one post and one time window.
This is different from uploading a creator's video file to Ads Manager. A file upload runs under the brand's identity with no link to the creator's profile. A sparked post runs under the creator's handle, keeps its social proof, and sends profile taps and follows to the creator. Many brands use both: the file for clean product-led cuts, the code for the posts that already did well organically.
Because the video already lives on TikTok, TikTok's Spark Ads page lists no limits on ratio, resolution, file type, bitrate or file size for the organic video, and a sparked video can run up to 10 minutes. The display name and caption come from the post. Our TikTok ad specs guide covers the specs for non-Spark uploads if you need both.
For creators: how to generate a Spark Ads code
TikTok's Smart+ Spark Ads guide (last updated October 2025) gives the creator-side flow in the TikTok app. Menu labels shift between app versions, so if a step looks different, look for Ad settings on the post itself.
Allow authorized posts on your profile. TikTok points to Settings and privacy > Privacy, or Me > Creator tools.
Open the post you want to authorize. It must be public; TikTok returns a not_public_video error for private posts.
Tap the three dots on the post, then tap Ad settings.
Agree to the advertising content terms if the app asks.
Turn on the Ad authorization toggle and tap Generate to create the video code.
Choose the authorization duration in the post's ad settings: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days.
Tap Copy code and send it to the advertiser. Send it in writing, next to the agreed duration, so both sides have a record.
Choosing the authorization duration
The duration is the longest the advertiser can run that post as an ad. TikTok's Spark Ads page frames the custom duration as a way to fit the campaign and control cost, and in a paid creator deal the window is part of the usage the brand is paying for, so agree on it up front. Pick the window from the media plan, not by habit. A one-week launch burst needs 7 or 30 days; an evergreen ad that might scale for months needs 60 or 365.
The duration must also cover the ad's schedule. TikTok's error list includes calculate_intersection_time_error, which means the authorization ends before the ad's end date, and auth_code_expired, which means the window has already closed. In both cases TikTok's fix is the same: contact the creator to extend or adjust the authorization. Agree on who asks for an extension and how much notice they need before the contract is signed. The usage-rights section of our UGC brief template is a good place to write the duration, the platforms and the extension terms down.
For advertisers: how to apply a Spark Ads authorization code
TikTok gives two routes. You can store authorized posts in your creative library first, or add codes directly while building an ad. The library route is cleaner when an agency or several media buyers share one account.
Library route: in TikTok Ads Manager, go to Tools, then under the Creative tab click Creative library, then Spark ads posts.
Click Apply for Authorization, paste the video code into the search bar and click Search.
Check the preview. Confirm it is the right post, the right account and the expected authorization period, then confirm.
Ad route (manual or search campaign): create the campaign and ad group, then in Ad creatives click + Add videos or images and open the TikTok posts tab.
Click Add post and enter the codes. TikTok lets you batch authorize up to 20 video codes at a time.
Review the authorization period shown under each post, complete Ad details, Destination and optional Tracking, then click Publish all.
Batch authorization, duets, stitches and your own posts
Batch authorization is the 20-codes-at-once option in the TikTok posts tab. It is the fastest way to load a creator round, but it only saves time if every code arrives with the creator's handle and agreed window, so ask for codes in one sheet rather than in scattered DMs.
Duets and Stitches involve two creators, so they need two codes. TikTok's flow is to enter the code from the second creator first; Ads Manager flags it as a dual-creator post and asks for the code from the first creator's original post, then you review and confirm. Some posts cannot be sparked at all: TikTok's error list rejects Story videos, duet carousels, posts that tag multiple other posts, and some multi-person duet or stitch posts.
Your own brand account does not need a code for every post. TikTok's creation guide lets you pull posts from linked business accounts or from accounts authorized through Business Center, alongside posts authorized by code. If you run several brand handles, linking them once saves repeated code requests.
Limits and rules to know before you launch
These come from TikTok's Spark Ads and creation guide pages (June 2026) and are the ones that cause the most surprises in practice:
Up to 10,000 Spark Ads per TikTok Ads Manager account.
Sparked videos can be up to 10 minutes long.
The caption cannot be edited after the post is authorized as an ad, so the creator should finalize it first.
A private video becomes public once it is used in a campaign, and its privacy status cannot change during promotion.
A video code can only be deleted after every ad using that video is deleted, and the creator must un-authorize the post before deleting it from their account.
Banned or guideline-violating posts are rejected in Ads Manager.
Troubleshooting Spark Ads code errors
TikTok publishes an error reference for Spark Ads codes (last updated July 2025). The messages you are most likely to see, and TikTok's fix for each: auth_code_format_error (4013) means the code is malformed, so confirm it with the creator or get a new one. auth_code_not_found means the code no longer exists and the creator must generate a new one. auth_code_expired (4025) means the window lapsed and the creator must extend it. video_deleted or video_unavailable (4002) means the post was removed or blocked, so pick another post. not_public_video means the creator must make the post public. user_permission_missing means your own Ads Manager user lacks ad-creation permission. A call_rpc_fail or call_db_fail (-500) is a server-side failure; refresh and retry later.
Most code problems are workflow problems: a code pasted with a trailing space, a post made private after the code was sent, or a 7-day code used for a month-long flight. A short checklist in the creator brief (public post, final caption, agreed duration, code sent in writing) prevents nearly all of them.
Making Spark Ads worth the code
A Spark Ad is only as good as the post behind it. TikTok's creative best-practices page asks for the content proposition in the first 3 seconds and the hook within the first 6, so judge creator posts on the opening before you request a code. Start from proven openings in our UGC hooks library, structure the brief with a UGC script template, and compare sparked posts on 2-second and 6-second view rates with the hook rate calculator instead of on likes.
If you also want brand-owned takes to test next to creator posts, FireplaceUGC produces 9:16 MP4 creator-style takes with AI actors in modes such as Talking Video and Product in Hand. You own the files and upload them yourself; they are your brand's ads, not a creator's post, so they run as regular In-Feed ads and should be disclosed as AI where the rules require it (see our AI ad disclosure rules). For category angles, see the skincare and agencies pages.
Common questions
How do I get a Spark Ads code on TikTok?
Open your public post, tap the three dots, tap Ad settings, turn on Ad authorization, tap Generate, choose 7, 30, 60 or 365 days, then tap Copy code and send it to the advertiser.
How long does a Spark Ads authorization code last?
As long as the creator chooses when generating it: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. If it lapses, Ads Manager shows auth_code_expired and TikTok's fix is to ask the creator to extend the authorization.
Where do I enter a Spark Ads code in TikTok Ads Manager?
Either Tools > Creative library > Spark ads posts > Apply for Authorization, or inside an ad under Ad creatives > TikTok posts > Add post, where you can enter up to 20 codes at once.
Can a creator delete a video that is running as a Spark Ad?
Not while it is authorized. TikTok requires the video to be un-authorized as a Spark Ad first, and a video code can only be deleted after all ads using the video are deleted.
